Earring and necklace pendants made from ‘ancient’ and less ancient porcelain shards have become something of a fad. There are a number of such shops on Nanlouguxiang. Shards are smoothed into pleasing shapes, and inlaid in a metal frame. This is a cheapy version.

A rope used to carry things, with a loop at the end. I bought it because I loved the combination of indigo and white (indigo batik dying is a specialty of the Bai people) alongside the graphic red and black. Although you can find the rope in lots of places around Yunnan province, I was biking around in Xizhou and bought it from a store specializing in rope.

The spray painted mural definitely sets this stop apart from the others. Hats off to the officials who allowed spray paint – so often associated with the informal advertising of job seekers who scrawl or stencil their mobile numbers everywhere – a place in Beijing’s subway.
